Faculty Spotlight: Dr. Megan Wagner

Newsletter Issue:
August 2011

Rev. Megan Wagner, Ph.D., is Co-Provost of the Chaplaincy Institute and Director of Spiritual Psychology at ChI. She is a therapist, spiritual director, artist, Kabbalah teacher, interfaith minister, drummer, ritual leader and author. Rev. Wagner is founding director of Tree of Life Teachings International, where she runs Tree of Life Training, a Kabbalah School, and leads sacred journeys to Crete, Europe, Mexico and Africa. Her healing work integrates Psychology, Mysticism, Shamanism, Astrology, Alchemy and the sacred arts of drumming, chanting, storytelling and ritual.

Rev. Wagner has been collecting sacred chants for over 20 years. "I love chanting (especially in different languages) because it eclipses my left brain 'mind chatter' and allows the healing power of my right brain to do its magic." During the July 2011, Protestant Christianity module, she taught two sacred chants to students. "The amazing ChI students sounded like an instant choir!"

"We sang Noyana, an African Christian chant meaning “We Will Meet in Heaven”. This chant is very easy to learn and can be used for memorials of any kind, transition ceremonies or just sung for its own beauty. The second chant, Kyrie Eleison, Christe Eleison is Greek for "Lord have mercy, Christ have mercy.” This liturgical phrase is more commonly found in Eastern churches, in the Byzantine, Syrian, Alexandrian & Armenian liturgies. It is sung as a petition and a prayer of thanksgiving; an acknowledgment of what God has done, what God is doing, and what God will continue to do."

In addition to being Co-Provost at ChI, and teaching monthly courses for the Interfaith Ordination program, Rev. Wagner offers several learning opportunities through Tree of Life Teachings.

Every Fall, she teaches her favorite Spiritual Psychology Course. Eight days of in-depth studies in psycho-spiritual development based on Kabbalah’s Tree of Life. Teachings include Jung, Freud, Developmental and Archetypal psychology, Family Systems, attachment theory, defenses of the personality, shadow work, Alchemy and more.

Rev. Wagner also loves to travel with small groups to sacred sites for transformational journeys. "When people leave their familiar land and familiar ego patterns and travel to powerful sacred sites, they can have life-altering experiences. Check out my upcoming trips and join me when you can! The Damanhur trip is especially great for Interfaith work as the Temples of Humankind are dedicated to all faith traditions."
